According to the Newspaper Association of America, newspaper advertising spending fell 7% in the second quarter of 2011 to $6 billion, spending on print ads declined for the 20th straight quarter dating back to 2006, dipping almost 9% to $5.19 billion, while online ad spending advanced for the sixth straight quarter, rising 8% to $803.4 million.

According to the Pew Research Center's State of the New Media 2011, 41% of Americans in December 2010 cited the Internet as the place where they get "most of their news about national and international issues", up 17% from a year earlier. And in a survey conducted by Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, in partnership with the Knight Foundation, nearly half of all American adults (47%) reported that they get at least some local news and information on their cellphone or tablet computer.
